 Croeso i Ddosbarth Gwyddfid

Welcome to Dosbarth Gwyddfid

Welcome to another exciting year in Wat’s Dyke!
We hope that you have all had a very enjoyable Summer holiday with family and friends; it is amazing how quickly it goes by!

This term your child begins their journey in KS2 and the Lower Ks2 team consists of:

Mrs E. Davies & Mrs S. Jones – Dosbarth Gwyddfid

Miss V.Roberts & Mrs B.Williams – Dosbarth Llygad y Dydd

Mrs K.Gibson – Dosbarth Grug

Miss L.Roberts – PPA teacher

Mrs L.Edwards – Boost Teacher

Please use this page to keep updated with what your child is learning and remember that we will use See-Saw to share flipped learning homework tasks and occasional messages. It is very important to log into your child’s See-Saw account.

Autumn Term 2017

The children have been busy learning about how to be super heroes in the classroom by being ambitious, brave, creative and caring learners. They have shared their ideas on the school’s Golden Principles and have used their positive thinking to discuss how important it is to have a Growth Mindset.

Let’s Celebrate

This year we are looking forward to embracing the creative curriculum where the children will be leading the way in their topics and our first one is ‘Let’s Celebrate’.

The children will be working collaboratively to share their ideas about what they want to find out and how they want to do it. Their first task will be to work together to develop the BIG QUESTION.  They will learn about the skills they need to develop to answer the question and will take charge of their learning through the planning process and Over to You lessons to independently apply their knowledge and skills.

Numeracy and Literacy skills will be planned carefully into topic lessons and we look forward to developing the strands of the digital competency framework as we work on our ICT knowledge and skills.

Maths

This term in Maths the children will be focusing on Place value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Money and Fractions. The children will be provided with the opportunities to select their level of challenge and learn new ways to tackle problems. With growth mindset being an integral part of the ethos at Wat’s Dyke we will actively encourage the children to challenge their brains, celebrate mistakes and always remember that if we don’t understand something straight away then we are ambitious, brave learners and we don’t understand it….YET!

Keep an eye on your Seesaw page for Flipped Learning videos to help you back in the classroom.

English

Children will be learning about the features of and how to write their own non-chronological reports and newspaper reports. They will then be able to transfer these skills into their topic work. We will also be developing our skills in reading through many avenues including our Group and Guided reading sessions, practicing our joined handwriting, concentrating on spellings, punctuation and grammar and being involved in many oracy tasks with all members of our class.

P.E. Days

P.E. days during this term will be Thursdays (outdoor) and Fridays (indoor). We would be grateful if you could ensure that your child’s P.E. kit is in school at all times – white tops, black shorts and pumps, children will require their trainers for outdoor P.E on a Thursday.

Flipped Learning – linking home and the classroom

We appreciate that it can be challenging to help your child keep track of when they’re reading and completing other homework tasks, hopefully this guide will help. We encourage children to take as much responsibility and ownership of organising themselves as they strive to become independent life-long learners.

As we have already referred to above your child’s SeeSaw account is extremely important as this is how we will communicate homework tasks. The children have been provided with flipped learning notebooks, if they have been asked to watch a video clip they can use the book to make notes or practise the maths concept they have just watched or we may ask them to research a question and again they can use their notebooks to note down their answer.

Reading homework

It is important children continue to read every day and to read a breadth of texts, we particularly want to encourage reading for pleasure and the children choosing books they will enjoy as they continue their pledge of becoming ‘Champions of Reading’. Children should be given the opportunity to talk about what they are reading to show understanding and also given the opportunity to share their opinions. Please ensure the children respond in their reading records with a comment about the book they have read and they complete any of the activity pages in their records. Children are also asked to access Readtheory on-line to practise their comprehension skills and Bug Club to practise different skills using the e-books provided. All log in details are attached to your child’s reading record as an ICT passport.

Times tables

Times tables are a fundamental part of Maths. Having quick recall of your times tables will benefit your child both in and out of school.

There are many on-line maths games or apps which can help with the children staying focused on their tables practise.

http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/maths/

Please help your child learn their times tables. Here are a few suggestions of how you can do this:

  • Chanting them as they march upstairs to bed
  • Quick fire questions on a journey in the car or walking to and from school
  • Putting the times tables into a word problem, for example, a bag contains 5 apples.  How many apples will you have if you buy 2 bags?

Spelling Tasks

Spelling patterns will be an integral part of English lessons and we will work to ensure the children are confident with the spelling of the first and second hundred high frequency words. Encouragement of spellings at home will be a great benefit, make it fun, play scrabble or hangman, use word-searches, rainbow write in different coloured pens, write silly sentences using the spelling word.

Again there are many ideas to be found on-line which can help with activities at home.

****************

It was lovely to meet those of you who came to the ‘Meet the Teacher’ after school sessions the other week and we look forward to working with you and your child during the year ahead.

Mrs E Davies & Mrs S Jones 🙂

We give pupils spellings to learn and set an online maths game for them to play (please click on the link below) on a fortnightly basis.  These will both be set alternately on a Monday and completed over a two week period.

Spellings are paper based and should be submitted to the appropriate basic skills teacher.

Pupils should attempt the online maths game independently at home, we will be able to track their progress from school. This will provide an opportunity for pupils to practice their numeracy skills more regularly.

Autumn Term 2015

A warm welcome to Year 3’s page telling you all about the fun and interesting things we will be doing this Autumn  term.

 Pop-up Author

A huge thank you to Anthony McGowan for visiting on Thursday 26th November. Children in our class have been reading the story, ‘The Bare Bum Gang and the Holy Grail’ in preparation for the author visit organised by Rhosnesni High School.

Children in year 3 were engrossed from the beginning! They found the story hilarious and were fully engaged in what Anthony had to say about his series of books. Anthony was very impressed with all the fantastic questions the children asked. They had lots of giggles listening to the inspiration behind the story.

Take a look at the photographs from the visit and some of the thankyou letters the children have written to Anthony.
